Garifuna "March to the Capital" planned
The objective of this announcement is to share with you, a little information extracted from the meeting that took place at Luba Awanseruni yesterday regarding land invasion that is taking place in Labuga. We were informed that there is a “select group” supported by a political party to invade Garifuna land in Livingston, Guatemala.
During the meeting yesterday, we were able to hear a variety of testimonies from the different participants. In one testimony, a Garifuna brother went to check on a measurement regarding a property a week ago. He informed us that his life was threatened by the invaders and their leader. They said to him in Spanish:
A provisional commission has been elected to initiate a plan of action. The commission will accompany a caravan of Garinagu from Labuga and Puerto Barrios to the capital on April 12, 2011. This particular date is important to us for many reasons; it will be 214 years since the Garinagu were exiled from St. Vincent to Honduras, Central America.
We plan to be in Guatemala City to commemorate the Garifuna presence in Central America and to join the efforts of the Garinagu in Honduras. Like our brothers and sisters in Honduras, we are still struggling for our basic “human rights” and ironically, we are still fighting for our lands.
To be continued...
