A Mild and Historic Moment

Another historic moment took place in Labuga, March 12th 2010. This time around it was only Alvaro and I. Alvaro is from Spain and he is volunteering for the Library project Beluba Luba Furendei that we have had here for the past year and half. This particular library project has extended its service to a nearby village more or less hour and a half from the library here in Labuga.

The Children in La Guiera Elementary School inaugurated their first English lesson ever on March 12, 2010. The objective of the library English program is to reach all the children in Labuga regardless of religion, race or economic status. However the original idea was to work with my Garifuna community here in Labuga.

This journey began when Roman Avila and I visited Epifanio Nery, well know in the community as "Bibi", on October 22,2002 at Luba Awansseruni, a Garifuna organization where he held the secretary position. BiBi, as he was tenderly known, died in a tragic accident on his way to Guatemala City on the 17th March 2004.

Today marks the sixth year since BiBi departed and Imenigi arrived. My son Imenigi was born about three hours after BiBi’s tragic death. Since then I have been having a relationship with Imenigi, however the one I have with BiBi still continues. The death of my friend and the birth of my son is a relationship with the here and now.

In the tragic accident another Garifuna woman, tenderly know as Toya, continued her journey. Another mystery took place that same day, German and Chacho came out of the same accident with enough courage and strength to help the ones that could not help themselves.

I would like to draw your attention to this point; a relationship is exactly this or maybe more. You see, it’s about finding courage and strength to help the ones that cannot help themselves.

To be continued...

Please feel free to share your point of view.
